Using an old teacup and a few scraps, you can easily create a pretty and useful pincushion. I quickly made this from items I had: a cup, Eric Carle fabric, a little gathered yoyo, a button, vintage cloth tape measure, and a couple of pins.
You'll need:
- a cup
- a scrap of fabric [2" in diameter bigger than the rim of your cup]
- batting [I use cotton batting scraps]
- trim to fit around the outside of your cup [ribbon, rickrack, vintage cloth tape measure]
- needle and thread
- scissors
- glue [I use Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue]
- optional: decorative buttons, pins
[1] Cut a circle of fabric 2" larger than the diameter of your cup
[2] Cut a circle of batting the size of the rim of your cup and tack it [with a stitch] to the middle of the wrong side of your fabric; this makes the finished top of your pincushion smooth
[3] Sew on any decorative buttons, yoyos, etc. to the top of your fabric
[4] With a running stitch, gather the edge of your circle of fabric and pull partway closed
[5] Stuff tightly with batting, pull thread tight to make a puffy ball, and secure thread with a few stitches
[6] Run a bead of glue around the inside of your cup; center the fabric ball and push it partway down into the cup
[7] Glue trim around the outside, making sure the end is nicely finished
[8] Decorate your pincushion with a fancy pin
