In the 1950s, we vacationed on Cape Cod, camping in a green canvas tent or staying in Aunt Ida’s barn with a green-and-white striped door. The beach was our dad’s domain--our mother, not so much. I loved everything about the Cape--salty air, beach roses, sandy beaches, seashells, mist. What’s not to love? Oh, the creepy horseshoe crabs at Nauset Light.
At an early age, I made up my mind to live there. Unfortunately, gentrification rendered the little shingled cottages extinct. Fortunately, in 2015 a spontaneous road trip took us to the rocky coast of Maine, and we moved here two months later. My lifelong dream fulfilled!
Construction Details:
OCEAN is my own design using batik fabrics to denote dark sea water gradually becoming light waves on the sandy shore. I overlaid this with cotton netting, seaweed, and shell beads. The outer edge is lined with shells and twine.
The seaweed is made by casting on and binding off yarn, no knitting or purling required. A free pattern for Channelled Wrack is available here.
