​Grandmother's Fan Aprons

GRANDMOTHER’S FAN: MY STORY
In the summer of 2015, Mary Browne of Knox NY gave me two large bags full of patchwork pieces and squares from her late husband’s grandmother, “Granny” Browne. Knowing that I love quilts and vintage fabrics, Mary assured me “You’ll do something with them.”
As I sorted through the collection, two ideas came to mind:
  • Create a ​display of Granny Browne’s Depression-era quiltmaking techniques, currently on exhibit in the Community Room at Berne Public Library, 1763 Helderberg Trail (Route 443), Berne NY 12023.
  • Use the many “Grandmother’s Fan” pieces to create a dozen aprons for a fundraiser for Friends of the Berne Library. The aprons quickly sold out. See them below.

"Green Grow the Lilacs"
​Apron body is lilac with white pin dots. Trim is periwinkle and green floral, with rickrack and button detail.

"Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue"
Apron body is light blue and white stripes. Trim is red stripes with yoyo and button detail.

"Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly"
​Apron body is lavender with white pin dots. Trim is blue/red/yellow floral, with button and rickrack detail.

"Her Heart Belongs to Tangerine"
Apron body is white with black pin dots. Trims are tone-on-tone orange and black bubbles, with yoyo and button detail.

"Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet"
Apron body is white with black pin dots. Trims are gray with white dots and gray floral, with yoyo and button detail.


"Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White"
Apron body is dusty rose with white pin dots. Trim is yellow and pink floral, with yoyo, button, and rickrack detail.

"Pretty in Pink"
Apron body is light pink with white pin dots. Trim is blue stripes, with rickrack and button detail.

"Good Day Sunshine"
Apron body is yellow and white checks. Trim is yellow and purple floral, with yoyo and button detail.

"Here Comes the Sun"
Apron body is dark yellow with white pin dots. Trims are dark blue and blue+green floral, with yoyo and button detail.

"Sunshine on My Shoulders"
​Apron body is yellow and white check. Trims are red check and red/blue/yellow stripes, with rickrack and button detail.

"The Chicken Dance"
Apron body is yellow and white stripes. Trim is red with yellow chicks, with rickrack and button detail.
