Welcome to THE SEWING BEE! Please join us as we support our youngest children by creating useful homesewn items for babies in Waldo County, Maine.

Our purpose is to work with the sewing community in creating useful homesewn baby items for low-income families served by agencies in Waldo County. We welcome all sewists who have a desire to reach out to the community.

To ensure the quality and safety of our items, we ask that our volunteer sewists:
  • Are able to sew independently and follow written instructions
  • Have access to a sewing machine and basic sewing equipment (ex. scissors, shears, pins, iron; pinking shears are helpful)
  • Work in a smoke-free environment

How it works:
  • The Sewing Bee provides materials in a cloth tote bag: fabric cut to size, samples, patterns, instructions, turning tools as needed, thread, velcro.
  • The Sewing Bee delivers the materials at an agreed-upon location.
  • The volunteer picks up the tote bag and completes the projects inside; the Sewing Bee is available to answer any questions.
  • The volunteer returns the finished items in the tote bag.
  • The Sewing Bee picks up the bag, inspects and packages the items, and delivers them to the agency.

Funding:
  • The Sewing Bee receives no financial support from Springbrook Hill Owners Association. We are funded entirely by donations of materials and monetary gifts. We are supported in part by PinchPenny Threads, a sewing studio in the Belfast community.

Items and materials:
  • We currently are sewing bibs in three sizes (infant, baby, toddler), burp cloths, pacifier clips, and floor play mats.
  • We use pre-washed new/unused 100% cotton fabrics and polyester or cotton batting. All items are machine-washable and -dryable.
  • For safety reasons, we do not use drawstrings; ribbons over 12”; buttons or attachments that may come loose; or fuzzy polyester fabrics like fleece or minky.
